MOVEMENT FOR THE EMANCIPATION OF NIGERIA (MEN)
On the Alarming Rise of Teenage Prostitution at Nana House, Old Airport Junction, Jos
The Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria (MEN) expresses grave concern over the disturbing and unacceptable rise of teenage prostitution around Nana House, Old Airport Junction, Jos, Plateau State. What is unfolding in this area is not merely a social issue but a serious moral, legal, and security crisis that threatens the future of our children and undermines the core values of our society.
MEN is alarmed by the increasing presence of underage girls on the streets late into the night, often unattended and unaccounted for by their parents or guardians. This trend reflects a dangerous collapse of parental responsibility, social control, and institutional oversight. When children roam the streets between 7 – 10pm and beyond without supervision, society is already sliding into collective failure.
Teenage prostitution is the outcome of multiple systemic breakdowns, including parental negligence, poverty, unemployment, peer pressure, drug abuse, weak social welfare systems, and declining moral standards. While some children may act against parental wishes, it is undeniable that many parents have abdicated their responsibilities, allowing the streets to become the primary influence shaping the lives of their children.
MEN therefore calls for urgent and coordinated action. We demand that the Plateau State Government enforce parental accountability through corrective measures such as mandatory counseling, parenting education, community service, or fines where minors are found in such activities. We also call on law enforcement agencies, the Ministry of Women Affairs, and child protection bodies to intensify surveillance, rescue operations, rehabilitation, and reintegration of affected children. Furthermore, strict legal action must be taken against all adults and older boys who exploit underage girls, as such acts constitute child abuse and statutory rape.
Jos is known as a city of peace, tolerance, and strong family values, and allowing teenage prostitution to flourish unchecked is a direct assault on this identity. Protecting children is a collective responsibility of parents, communities, religious institutions, and government. MEN will continue to advocate, mobilize, and pressure all relevant authorities until decisive action is taken.
Enough is enough, our children are not for sale.
